To my surprise, it seems that it could not even find it. When I got home, I was able to confirm that I left my desktop on, It was not in sleep mode and when my mac is back on my LAN, I can remote into my desktop just fine. To recreate the issue, I used my phone as a hotspot and VPN'd back into my network and the same thing.
